The Ancient Meditation Technique that Brings Real Peace of Mind
Vipassand-bhavand, "the development of insight," embodies
the essence of the teaching of the Buddha. As taught by S. N. Goenka,
this path to self-awareness is extraordinary in its simplicity,
its lack of dogma and, above all, its results. The Vipassana technique
can be successfully applied by anyone.
Based on the lectures and writings of S.
N. Goenkaand prepared under his direct guidanceThe
Art of Living shows how this technique can be used to solve problems,
develop unused potential, and lead a peaceful, productive life.
It includes stories by S. N. Goenka, as well as answers to students'
questions, that convey a vivid sense of his teaching.
S. N. Goenka's Vipassana courses
have attracted thousands of people of every background. Unique
among teachers of meditation, Goenka is a retired industrialist
and former leader of the Indian Community in Burma. Although a
layman, his teaching has won the approval of senior Buddhist monks
in Burma, India, and Sri Lanka, a number of whom have taken courses
under his guidance. Despite his magnetism, he has no wish to be
a "guru" instead he teaches self-responsibility.
This is the first systematic study of his teachings to appear
in English.

Karma and Chaos: New and Collected Essays on Vipassana Meditation
FROM THE PUBLISHER
These eight essays explore the interface between psychiatry, science,
and the timeless teachings of the Buddha. Drawn from the personal
experiences of a therapist and practitioner of Vipassana meditation,
this work explores meditation's similarities and differences with
psychotherapeutic and scientific endeavors. In the title essay,
parallels are drawn between the atomic synthesis of free choice
and lawful consequence in Chaos Theory and karma, offering contemporary
insights into one of Buddhism's core concepts. The empirical roots
of meditation, its relevance to daily life, and the challenges
and benefits of daily practice of Vipassana meditation are also
addressed. Practical examples for continued observation outside
of formal meditation retreats guide readers in incorporating Buddhist
practice into daily life.

Vipassana Meditation
FROM THE PUBLISHER

introduction to sensation-based vipassana meditation, whichmany
practitioners believe to be the method used by Buddha over 2,500
years ago. Marshal Glickman's apporach is unique-he examines a
meditation practice deeply rooted within a historic Buddhist framework
and provides us with a modern-day, scientific explanation. He
presents meditation and Buddhist principles in contemporary language,
making ideas that can sound archaic or exotgic accessible and
easy to understand.

Mindful Money Guide.

Realizing Change: Vipassana Meditation in Action
FROM THE PUBLISHER
Featuring accounts by practitioners living everyday lives, this
introduction to Vipassana meditation provides a way for readers
to learn more about its benefits. Explained is what takes place
before, during, and after a ten-day silent meditation retreat. Each
participant follows the same discipline: silence, a basic moral
code known as the five precepts, a prescribed timetable, a vegetarian
diet, and a commitment to practicing only what is taught at the
retreat. This first-person account of the retreat reveals the challenges
and benefits of facing reality head-on through direct observation
and of learning to observe instead of reacting to thoughts, emotions,
and sensations. In addition, the ways in which Vipassana meditation
techniques are applied to individuals, institutions, children, prisoners,
work places, and fields of science and social action are examined.
Although based on the teachings of the Buddha, the practice of Vipassana
as illustrated in this book has broad appeal to other religious
and nonsectarian audiences.
About the Author:
Ian Hetherington has been practicing Vipassana meditation for
20 years. He teaches Vipassana as a senior assistant to the internationally
renowned S. N. Goenka.
